GFWAust were responsible for the precision grouting beneath the mosaic wall after it was relocated
University of Notre Dame Australia are developing the site of the Sacred Heart Church and parish buildings on the corner of Oxford and Victoria Streets to build a Medical Campus at Darlinghurst and construct a medical facility at an estimated cost of $17M, the project includes $6M for conservation works. The university plans to keep the 1847 church as a place of worship but restoration and refurbishment includes the demolition of the modern (1960s) extension and the relocation and reinstatement of the sanctuary mosaic fresco which was built in the Vatican.
Relocation of the mosaic required isolating the mosaic wall and lifting the complete wall into a new location on the end of the old church. When transferred a 200m gap beneath the structure needed to be completely filled with non shrink grout. Grouting and Foundation Works Australia were appointed by the development contractor Equiset to carry out the delicate grouting works.
GFWAust used a precision grout to carry out the works which were needed to be completed in one operation. The work was carried out late into the night to provide the required support strengths within the development program. The project works won the Institute of Engineers 2007Engineering Excellence Award for Heritage and Environmental.
